Rough Start Dooms Jaspers at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Manhattan baseball team suffered a midweek non-conference defeat to Seton Hall Wednesday afternoon, 14-3, at Sheppard Stadium.

Next up for Manhattan (15-28) is a pivotal MAAC series with newcomer, Mount St. Mary's, with first pitch of game one set for Friday at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN3 at Clover Stadium.

The Pirates struck first, utilizing a pair of extra-base hits from the first two batters to score the first run of the game. A single followed that up to make the score 2-0 before the Jaspers managed to record a pair of outs on a fly-out and a laser beam from Logan Pfannenbecker behind the dish to catch a Pirate trying to plunder second.

In the fourth inning, Pfannenbecker came inches within his second home run of the season but the ball went just foul down the left field line. He would draw a walk in the at-bat to be the team's first base runner of the game.

Manhattan managed its first hit in the sixth inning courtesy of Trevor Santos. Santos took the ball for a ride deep to right field and fell just short of leaving the park in what ended up being the right fielder's first three-bagger of the season. Santos was brought the final 90 feet on a base knock by Frankie Marinelli for the lead-off man's 27th RBI of the season, making the score 5-1.

Marinelli proceeded to do his best Pirate impression and stole second and then advanced to third on a fielder's choice later in the inning. The bases ended up loaded for Daniel Perez but got rung up on strikes to end the inning.

Manhattan managed to cut into the Pirate's lead in the seventh. Trevor Hansen drilled a single to center field and Santos took a pitch to the body to place runners on first and second. Nick Plue cleared the bases with another triple, his first of his collegiate career to make the score 5-3.

The ground that was made up was immediately retaken in the home half of the seventh inning when Alex Viera took the Jaspers for a ride to left field to make the score 8-3.
