Baseball Edged at UMBC in Series Opener

BALTIMORE, MD — Manhattan and University of Maryland, Baltimore County took a 2-2 tie into the ninth inning on Friday, but the Jaspers were unable to withstand the Retrievers' bats late, falling 3-2 at Alumni Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tyler Galletti put Manhattan on the board first in the second inning on an RBI single that scored Hunter Sute. The run was unearned for UMBC pitcher Sam Bell after Trevor Hansen reached base on an error at the hot corner, which advanced Sute into scoring position at second.

  • UMBC responded in the fourth inning with an RBI single from clean-up hitter Danny Orr. Similarly, the Retrievers' first run was also unearned thanks to lead-off hitter Jesiah Carpenter reaching base on an error from Guriyandel Salva at short, setting up the eventual RBI opportunity for Orr.

  • In the seventh inning, with the score still knotted at one apiece, Luke Buscaglia pinch ran for the Retrievers and proceeded to steal second and third base. Buscaglia would come home for the go-ahead on an RBI single from Derek Paris, making the score 2-1.

  • Leading off the ninth, Trevor Hansen launched a solo shot to left that tied the game.

  • With Chris Fidanza on the bump in the ninth, UMBC rallied to take game one. The winning run came home from third on a balk.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Tyler Galletti and Aidan Taclas each tallied two hits, including one double from the former and a pair of doubles from the latter.

  • With 16 two-baggers this season, Taclas is tied with Sacred Heart's Alex Ungar for second most doubles in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

  • Hansen's blast in the ninth was the 21st of his career and sixth of the campaign which ties him with Taclas for the team lead.
