Asheville, NC - Manhattan swept a doubleheader from UNC Asheville by scores of 16-2 and 8-3 thanks to hitting .366 with nine doubles, three home runs and 23 RBI on the day as the Jaspers clinched their second-straight series victory.
With the sweep, Manhattan extends its winning streak to three in moving to 4-8 while the Bulldogs fall to 2-11..
Junior
Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) paced the offensive attack, going 5-for-8 with a double, two home runs, six runs and eight RBI.
GAME ONE
Eleven different players hit safely as Manhattan scored 16 runs on 19 hits in rolling to a dominating victory over UNC Asheville in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.
Leading 4-2 entering the seventh inning, the Jaspers erupted for 12 runs over the final three frames in putting the game away.
Pena went 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI and and five runs while junior
Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) was 3-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI to pace the offensive onslaught. Graduate student
Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) also recorded three hits while adding four runs and two RBI to round out the top offensive performers for the visitors.
Junior RHP
Marc Galvan (Brielle, NJ / Manasquan) struck out three while yielding two runs, one earned, on three hits over 5.1 innings in moving to 1-1 on the year. Sophomore RHP
T.J. Stuart (Milford, CT / Joseph A. Foran) relieved Galvan in the sixth and stranded a pair of runners en route to firing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Chris Troost had two hits to lead and a RBI to lead the way for the Bulldogs.
GAME TWO
Senior
Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Pena had two hits and three RBI in leading Manhattan to an 8-3 win in the nightcap and a doubleheader sweep.
Graduate student RHP
Matt Simonetti (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) was the beneficiary of the offense, striking out eight over 4.2 dominating innings of relief in moving to 1-1 on th year.
Bisset opened the scoring in the fourth with a one-out RBI double before coming around to score on an
Alex Cerda (So., Miami, FL / Florida Christian School) RBI double in staking the Jaspers to an early 2-0 advantage.
Pena then stretched the lead out to 4-0 in the seventh with a two-run double that plated freshman
Will Trochiano (Morganville, NJ / Marlboro) and Forlow.
UNC Asheville got one run back in the bottom part of the frame before Manhattan answered with four in the ninth as Trochiano, Forlow, Pena and Bisset all delivered RBI hits.
Graduate student LHP
Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, NJ / Red Bank Regional) started and scattered two hits over 4.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
The Bulldogs were led by Joe Zayatz, who finished up 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
