LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Cross Country Championships were held on Saturday morning at Hess Fields at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) finished 20th in the men's race to lead the Jaspers to a seventh-place team showing. Then Manhattan women, meanwhile, placed eighth.
Rojeras posted a time of 25:45.83 over the 8000-meter course. Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) was the second Jasper across the line. He finished 29th in 26:16.26. Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) led a trio of Jaspers who finished within 10 seconds of each other. D'Emic was 47th in a time of 26:52.35, with Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.) following closely behind in 48th place (26:53.37). Jacob Adams (Yonkers, N.Y.) rounded out Manhattan's scoring quintent. He placed 51st overall in a time of 27:02.28. Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (53rd, 27:09.43) and Nathan Kotch (Tappan, N.Y.) (55th, 27:24.56) completed the Jaspers' top seven.
Manhattan complied 195 points in the team standings, good for seventh place. Iona had seven of the top eight finishers, collecting 16 team points, to win its 22nd consecutive MAAC championship. The Gaels' Mitch Goose took the individual title in 24:08.08.
The Jasper women ran together for much of the race, as Manhattan's top five finishers were separated by a mere 10 seconds. Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) led that group. She grabbed 38th place over the 6000-meter course, posting a time of 23:46.94. Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) was 39th in 23:48.35, while Johanna Petruski (Toms River, N.J.) finished 41st in 23:52.61. Rachel Lottermann (Washington Township, N.J.) and Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) crossed the line back-to-back. Lottermann grabbed 44th place in a time of 23:54.94 and Koskinen placed 45th in 23:57.50. Rounding out Manhattan's top seven were Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) (53rd, 24:32.96) and Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) (59th, 24:54.80).
Iona's Marion Joly-Testault grabbed the individual crown in 21:07.98. As a team, the Gaels won their eighth straight MAAC title with 26 points. Manhattan ended up with 207 team points to take eighth place, just behind seventh-place Niagara (201).
In addition, the MAAC named the Men's and Women's Cross Country All-Academic Teams on Saturday. Five Manhattan men and four women were recognized for their work in the classroom. Perrier, Rojeras, Voorheis, Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) and Will Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.) were selected on the men's side, while Cappello, Koskinen, Windle and Katie O'Connell (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned All-Academic Team nods for the women's team. To be selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher and completed at least two semesters at their institution.
