LEWISBURG, Pa. - Dartmouth hitting proved too much for the Manhattan College volleyball team in the opening match of the Bucknell Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Big Green (1-0) hit an impressive .320 (40 kills, eight errors, 100 attempts) in the match to post a 25-17, 25-10, 25-23 victory over the Jaspers (1-2) at Davis Gym.
Manhattan built an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but Dartmouth responded by taking six of the next seven points to open up a 7-4 advantage. Dartmouth extended its lead to 11-6, prompting a Manhattan timeout, before the Jaspers climbed back within three at 15-12. However, the Big Green used a 4-1 run to push its lead back to 19-13, and Dartmouth took the set by a 25-17 margin. As a team, Dartmouth made just one attack error in the entire set, hitting .324 (12 kills, 34 attempts).
The Big Green carried their momentum into the second set, scoring the first five points and 12 of the first 15. After a kill by Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) trimmed Dartmouth's advantage to 14-7, the Big Green went on an 8-1 rally to extend their lead to 22-8. Dartmouth hit .424 (17-3-33) in the set, which it won by a 25-10 count.
Dartmouth jumped out to the early lead again in the third set, pulling ahead 4-0 before the Jaspers rallied for five of the next seven points to trim their deficit to one at 6-5. Dartmouth responded with a four-point spurt to push its advantage back to five, 10-6. After Manhattan got back within 12-10, a 4-1 Dartmouth run extended the Big Green's lead to 16-11. With Dartmouth leading 19-14, a LaKell Havens (St. George, Utah) kill ignited a 5-0 Manhattan run that tied the score at 19-19. However, Dartmouth took the next three points to go up 22-19, and the Big Green won the third set 25-23 to finish off a 3-0 match victory.
McGuinness paced the Jaspers with 11 kills, while Havens, Alexa Lampasona (Remsenburg, N.Y.) and Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil) tallied seven kills apiece. Hollegn Henderson (Long Beach, Calif.) dished out 29 assists to go along with eight digs, and Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) contributed a team-high 10 digs. Overall, the Jaspers hit .048 (33-27-124) in the match.
Annie Villanueva notched 11 kills on .556 hitting to lead the Big Green. Elisa Scudder hit .700, slamming seven kills on 10 errorless swings, and added four blocks for Dartmouth. Meghan Cooney tallied a team-high 13 digs, as Dartmouth outdug Manhattan 53-46. Madeline Baird added 12 digs, while Kendall Houston posted a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs.
Manhattan is back in action with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Jaspers take on local rival Fordham (1-0) at 10 a.m. before concluding the tournament against host Bucknell (0-0) at 12 p.m.
