RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan baseball team dropped game two of a three game series at #10 Miami falling 18-1 on Saturday at Alex Rodriguez Park. The Hurricanes rallied for five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Jaspers senior starter Tom Costigan pitched 4 2/3 innings in his first loss of the season. 'Canes junior lefty Chris Hernandez picked up the win tossing seven strong innings with nine strikeouts.
Miami senior Scott Lawson posted the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a passed ball. Sophomores Harold Martinez and Rony Rodriguez followed each launching a two run homer to cap the five run inning.
Costigan settled on the mound retiring nine of 10 batters faced through a scoreless second, third and fourth innings. The right-hander from Cold Spring, N.Y. allowed just three hits with a strikeout in his season debut.
Manhattan cut into its deficit in the top of the fifth posting its first run of the ballgame. Junior first baseman Austin Sheffield led off with a single to left center, followed by a walk to freshman Kyle Murphy, and then two batters later red-shirt freshman catcher Ramon Ortega drove in Sheffield with a RBI single up the middle. Ortega went 2-for-3 from the plate.
Miami matched the run in the bottom of the fifth to go up 6-1, and then rallied for six more runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Junior catcher Yasmani Grandal led the Hurricanes offensive charge with five RBI on a 2-for-5 night at the plate. Martinez and designated hitter David Villasuso each added three RBI and two hits.
Jaspers' relievers Zac Goyer and Taylor Sewitt saw action out of the bullpen. Goyer gave up two hits, notched a strikeout, and did not allow an earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Sewitt closed out the final two innings in his first appearance this season.
Manhattan and Miami return to the Alex Rodriguez Park for the final game of the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
