RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College baseball team opens the 2010 campaign this weekend in Coral Gables, Fla. at the 10th ranked University of Miami. The Jaspers and Hurricanes meet for the first time since the 2006 NCAA Regional Finals in Lincoln, Neb. Miami holds a 3-0 advantage in series history. The three game series begins on Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field with first pitch at 7 p.m.
Manhattan, the 2010 MAAC Preseason favorite, is coming off a 35-18 campaign and their second straight MAAC Regular-Season championship. Manhattan's lineup features the 2010 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Kevin Nieto who led NCAA Division I with 1.57 runs per game last season. Manhattan will also rely on 2009 MAAC Pitcher of the Year Mike Gazzola who posted a 7-1 record and four complete games a year ago.
No. 10 Miami (3-0) rolled past Rutgers last weekend scoring 31 runs over the three game sweep. Chris Pelaez, a junior college transfer, anchored the offense going 8-for-11 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI. Hurricanes left-hander Eric Erickson gave the squad a solid performance on the hill in their first time out last Friday allowing just two hits without an earned run in 5 2/3 innings.
