RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? #13 Oklahoma State (4-0) junior left-hander Tyler Lyons pitched six strong innings without allowing a run helping the Cowboys to a 13-1 victory over the Manhattan College baseball team on Sunday in Stillwater, Okla. Manhattan (1-3) third baseman Chad Salem drove in the Jaspers' run and hit 2-for-3 from the plate.
The nationally ranked Cowboys jumped out to an early advantage and cruised the rest of the way. Junior outfielder Neil Medchill began the Oklahoma State charge with a three run homer in the bottom of the third. Classmate Doug Kroll assisted with the offensive production when he blasted home runs in back-to-back innings. Kroll sent a two run shot over the left field fence in the fifth, and then a solo home run in the same location in the sixth.
Medchill was 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Kroll went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Lyons struck out five batters and allowed Manhattan just two hits. Freshman reliever Uriah Fisher was nearly as precise as he closed out the final three innings limiting the Jaspers to two hits and an earned run.
Manhattan struggled moving base runners around the diamond. The Jaspers left five on base.
Jaspers' outfielder Mark Onorati tripled in the top of the ninth, and then Salem drove him in with a single up the middle breaking up the Cowboys shutout bid. First baseman Austin Sheffield was the third Jasper to record a hit in the contest.
Manhattan junior lefty Mike Gazzola lasted four and two third innings, allowed eight earned runs and struck out four. Tom Moran and Andrew McKenna saw action in relief.
The Jaspers return to action next weekend in Lynchburg, Va. versus Liberty. Manhattan plays a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, and one game on Sunday.
