RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College baseball team (1-5) dropped a pair of contests this afternoon in its doubleheader with South Alabama (5-3) falling 13-5 and 15-12 at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. David Doss, a junior catcher, erupted for four hits and four RBIs spoiling Jaspers' freshman left-hander Dan Forman's bid for his first collegiate win in game one. The Jaguars broke open game two with nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to secure a three run decision.
In game one, South Alabama registered nine unanswered runs over the first four innings. The Jaspers eventually got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Eric Nieto, a senior outfielder, blasted one over the left field wall marking his first homer of the season.
Doss would answer back soon thereafter with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the sixth. He also managed two doubles going 4-4 in the contest. Teammate Bunky Kateon complemented Doss homering twice in game one.
Manhattan made a surge in the eight and ninth inning, but it proved to be too little too late. In the top half of the eighth, freshman Osmani Sanchez came off the bench and knocked a two-run shot out of the ballpark. Then in the ninth, the Jaspers added two more before South Alabama reliever Brett Nickerson closed out the contest. Nickerson was credited with the win.
Sophomore right-hander Zac Goyer earned the start in game two. He got into the third inning with the game locked at 5-5.
Manhattan scored four of its first five runs in the top of the third as freshman Austin Sheffield singled up the middle allowing Eric Nieto and Dom Lombardi to score who reached base earlier that inning.
Lombardi was 3-4 in game two scoring three runs and knocking in one RBI, while Eric Nieto went 3-6 and scored twice.
Sheffield scored on a wild pitch later in the third, and Ryan Masters on a RBI single to wrap up the inning. Masters was 3-5 and scored a run. Sheffield had two hits and four RBIs in game two.
The Jaguars rallied for nine runs on nine hits and two errors over the fourth and fifth inning to take a commanding 14-5 advantage.
Manhattan rallied again in the last two innings, this time for seven more runs cutting its deficit to 15-12. Following this scoring surge, South Alabama called to the bullpen for Greg Johnson who got the final two outs and earned the save as the Jaguars secured the victory.
Freshman Kyle Waddell was credited with the loss. Jaguars starter Kevin Nabors earned the win going six innings, allowing five runs and striking out six.
The squads wrap up the four game tomorrow afternoon. Game time is set for noon.
