Riverdale, NY (May 15, 2005)- Manhattan senior
Gary Diaz became the program's all-time hits leader, tallying his 207th career hit on a two run single in the second, as the Jaspers posted a 10-3 MAAC win over Le Moyne this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. The win, the Jaspers eighth in their last nine games, improves Manhattan's record to 25-17 overall and 13-7 in MAAC play, moving the Jaspers into third place in the conference standings with one week remaining in the regular season. The Dolphins fall to 24-19, 14-8 in MAAC play.
After a scoreless first, Diaz's record breaking hit, a frozen rope into right field, plated
John Maser and
Matt Nevins to give Manhattan a 2-0 lead. The Jaspers doubled that lead in the third, as
Nunzio Franzese and Nevins each tallied RBI singles to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Jaspers.
Manhattan blew the game open with a six run fourth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate.
John Fitzpatrick, Nevins, and
Eric Nieto each posted an RBI single, Rizzotti belted an RBI double, Maser drew an RBI walk, and Diaz came through with an RBI fielder's choice to increase the Manhattan lead to 10-0.
Le Moyne would score twice in the fifth to make the score 10-2 before loading the bases with one out in the seventh before
Jesse Darcy came on in relief of starter
Josh Santerre, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly, before escaping the jam by striking out the Le Moyne batter looking to end the inning.
Santerre (5-3) scattered 10 hits over 6.1 innings for the win, allowing three runs while striking out five. Darcy went the final 2.2 innings, striking out three. Le Moyne starter Jon Maduro (2-3) allowed four runs, three earned, over 2.1 innings for the loss.
Manhattan gets back in action on Tuesday, May 17, when the Jaspers visit St. John's for the final non-conference game of the regular season. The first pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
