Buffalo, NY (May 15, 2004)- Chris Gaskin hit for the cycle in the second game of Manhattan's MAAC sweep of Canisius today at the Demske Sports Complex, taking game one, 14-7, and game two, 12-7. Manhattan is now 20-23-1 overall and 13-9 in MAAC play. Gaskin was 5-8 on the day, with five RBI and five runs scored.
In the nightcap, Gaskin doubled to lead off the second, singled with two out in the third, connected on a two-run homer in the seventh, and completed the cycle with a two-RBI triple in the eighth.
Manhattan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Gaskin scored on an RBI single by John Fitzpatrick before Canisius (4-40, 4-20) answered with three runs in the second and one in the third to take a 4-1 lead after three innings.
The Jaspers pulled to within one, 4-3, in the fourth on a two-run homer by Sylvester Gutierrez, scoring Josh Greco, but the Griffs extended the lead back to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Manhattan put the game out of reach with three runs in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. In the seventh Gaskin's round tripper plated Sam Deluca, and Gutierrez drove home Fitzpatrick with a single. Gaskin's triple in the eighth chased home Frank Cappello and Nick Derba, and Matt Cucurullo's single scored Gaskin in the eighth. In the ninth, Derba doubled home Gary Diaz and John Maser, and Cappello tripled home Derba.
Canisius scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.
Steve Bronder (3-3) earned the win in relief of Chris Cody, pitching the final five innings. Brandon Labedz (0-1) took the loss for the Griffs.
In the first game, Manhattan took the early lead, scoring two runs in the first as Cucurullo's RBI single scored Derba for the first run, and Gaskin scored on a wild pitch. In the second, the Jaspers extended the lead to 3-0 when Cappello's double drove home Derba.
Manhattan appeared to be in control after scoring twice more in the third on a two-run blast by Cucurullo made the score 5-0, but Canisius scored the next five runs to tie the score at 5-5 after four full innings.
The Jaspers would not be denied, as the bats came alive again in the sixth, as Cappello's RBI single and Sam Deluca's two-RBI double gave Manhattan back the lead, 8-5. Manhattan would put the game away in the seventh, scoring six runs. Diaz started things off with an RBI double, scoring Greco before Derba tripled home Diaz and Maser. Deluca then singled home Derba before Gaskin followed with a single, plating Cappello. Deluca scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to make the score 14-5.
Canisius would plate two in the bottom of the seventh to provide the final margin.
Jesse Darcy (3-4) took the win in relief of Josh Santerre, going the final 3.1 innings, allowing no earned runs, one hit, and striking out four.
Manhattan returns to the diamond on Tuesday, May 18, hosting Pace in a twin bill slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
