VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS HOFSTRA, 3-1

Hempstead, NY (September 6, 2003)- Goedele Van Cauteren notched the second triple-double of the day as she tallied 21 kills, 24 assists and 11 digs to lead Manhattan College to a four-game victory (27-30, 30-22, 26-30, 30-32) over Hofstra University in the final match of the 2003 Hofstra/Asics New York Classic.



Manhattan earned their first win of the season following four losses to open the season. Hofstra drops their second straight match and falls to 1-5.



Despite being out-hit .303 to .182 in the first game, the Jaspers pulled out the win in the first stanza as they served four service aces and Hofstra tallied five service errors.



Hofstra evened the match in the second game with some stellar defense, holding Manhattan to a .022 attack percentage. Senior Beth Arnette powered Hofstra to the win in game two as she had two kills, 10 assists and four digs.



Van Cauteren and Megan O'Dorisio combined for 11 of Manhattan's 20 kills in the pivotal third game as the Jaspers escaped with a four-point win. The game was tied at 20 before Manhattan scored six of the next eight points in the game to take a commanding 26-22 lead. O'Dorisio put the game away with a kill off an assists from Van Cauteren.


The Jaspers were able to win their first match of the season with a come-from-behind win in the fourth game. Manhattan trailed 28-26 following a service ace from Hofstra freshman Danielle Pratte. The Jaspers would then tie the game with a quick 3-1 spurt before adding another 3-1 run to win the match.


For the fifth match in a row, sophomore Tessa Sphar led the Pride in kills, this time with 18. Pratte tallied the first double-double of her career with 10 kills and a team-high 14 digs. Pratte's 10 kills came on 16 attempts with no errors for a .625 hitting percentage.


O'Dorisio and Marija Pfeifer were also in double figure kills for the Jaspers with 15 and 14, respectively.


The Lady Jaspers return to action on Tuesday, September 9, when they host the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. at Draddy Gym in the 2003 home opener.
