Stony Brook Takes Two from Manhattan Thursday

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan dropped a pair to Stony Brook on Thursday afternoon at Gaelic Park. The losses snapped the Jaspers' three-game winning streak.

Game 1: Stony Brook 6, Manhattan 2
Stony Brook broke open a 0-0 game with a six-run fifth inning.

After an RBI single, the Seawolves back-to-back-to-back extra-base hits to extend the lead. Catherine Anne Kupinski doubled to left-center, Ashley Jacobson tripled to right-center, and Alyssa Costello hit a two-run homer to right-center to cap the scoring.

Five of the six runs were charged to Mollie Charest. Charest didn't allow a run over 4.1 innings. Charest cruised through the first two innings and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third. Charest finished with four strikeouts and allowed five hits.

Maddy Weir supplied the two runs for the Jaspers in the bottom of the seventh. The true freshman blasted a two-run homer down the left-field line with one away.

Ashton Melaas picked up her sixth win of the year after going the distance. Melass pitched to contact and only struck out two Jaspers.

Game 2: Stony Brook 5, Manhattan 3
Mia Haynes was perfect through six innings for Stony Brook in game two. The Jaspers got their first base runner in the seventh and pushed across three runs to get within two.

Stony Brook led 2-0 after five as Makayla Veneziale kept the Jaspers in it. Veneziale worked around base runners in the second, third, and fourth innings. The right-hander struck out seven over her 5.1 innings.

Emily Reinstein made it 3-0 Stony Brook with a solo shot with one out in the sixth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for Alicia Orosco. Orosco singled home two to make it 5-0. A sacrifice fly made it 6-0.

Anissa Villalobos broke up Haynes' perfect game with a bunt single to start the seventh. Villalobos scored the first run on a Kaitlyn Flood RBI single. Marika Deemer brought in the second run with a groundout. Lindsey Hoag brought in Flood with a single of her own.

Orosco finished game two 3-4 with two runs scored. Reistien also had two hits for the Seawolves. Three different Jaspers scored and drove in the runs.

Manhattan has one day off before its back in action on Saturday at Mount St. Mary's for a doubleheader as MAAC play resumes for the Jaspers.
