Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Jaspers Edged by Gales

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y – Manhattan was edged by Iona 12-11 on Wednesday afternoon.

After a solid first half for the Jaspers, the Gales began to chip away at the Jaspers' lead. The Gales tied the game twice before ultimately taking a two-point lead that would carry them to victory. The loss was the third straight for the Jaspers.

Julianna Iovine opened up the scoring for the game, scoring a quick goal on the first possession. The Jaspers scored two more goals in the first, putting them up by two going into the second. The Gales began to answer back in the second quarter, tying the game at three. However, the Jaspers' offense answered back, getting them out of the first half up 5-4. The two goals came from Brooke Leonard and Colleen Rattigan

The second half of the game showed the two offenses' ability to score goals--combining for 14. The Jaspers scored the first two goals of the half, putting them up by three, the game's largest lead. The Gaels then fired back two goals of their own, bringing the game back within one, 7-6. The two teams went goal-for-goal the rest of the third, with the Gales scoring the tying goal with 60 seconds remaining.

In the fourth quarter, the Jaspers again scored the first two goals. However, the remainder of the quarter played out differently from the previous three. The Gales began an all-out assault on the Jaspers' defense. The Gales scored three goals, the last two only 26 seconds apart. This scoring burst gave the Gales the lead for the first time in the game. The game-winning goal came from Maliya Haddock with 4:34 to play.

Today's game saw diverse scoring for the Jaspers. Nine Jaspers scored against Iona. Jillian Reiner was the only one of the nine who scored more than one goal, finishing the match with a hat trick and three ground balls.

Manhattan comes home to face Siena Saturday, Apr. 15, at 4 p.m. in Gaelic Park. The game will air on ESPN+.
