RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan men's lacrosse team scored four goals in the final four minutes but could not get the fifth needed to tie the game as the Green and White were defeated by the Marist Red Foxes, 10-9, at Gaelic Park on Saturday.
Manhattan suffers its first conference setback, falling to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in MAAC play. Marist improves to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The Jaspers fell behind early, with the first quarter ending in a 4-2 advantage for the Red Foxes, who scored the final three goals of the quarter to secure the advantage.
Marist remained in control until the final quarter when the Jaspers made their move offensively. The charge began with just under 10 minutes to play when
Kelly DuPree scored his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from
Dan MacKinney, on a man-up opportunity to cut the lead to four, 10-6.
With just under four minutes remaining, the Jaspers got another one past the Red Foxes goalie, with MacKinney switching from assisting to being the one to put the ball in the back of the net, cutting the lead to 10-7. About 40 seconds later,
Christian Lyons did his part and cut the lead to two off a feed from
Kyle Gucwa. The lead ticked down to one goal thanks to another MacKinney assist while the goal was netted by Dupree.
With about 15 seconds left, Manhattan had a chance to tie the game up. The Jaspers went from just behind midfield and got a quality shot but Tahdg O'Riodan's shot went just wide of the goalie.
Manhattan returns to action next Saturday with a trip to Lexington, Va. for a meeting with VMI at 12 p.m.
