JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Manhattan battled Saint Peter's in a five-set match and emerged victorious in the fifth, marking their fifth consecutive win. The final set scores were 25-14, 25-23, 19-25, 23-25, and 15-10.
After winning the first two sets of the match, the Peacocks made their final stand, winning the next two sets to force the fifth.
The first set was the strongest for the Jaspers, as they beat the Peacocks by more than 10 points. The set began with both teams keeping up with each other. However, the Jaspers extended their lead with a four-point run, initiated by a kill from Chloe Anderson, assisted by Sarah Emmons. By the end of this run, the Jaspers led the Peacocks by six points, 10-4. The Jaspers continued to dominate the Peacocks for the remainder of the set, preventing them from taking the lead.
The Jaspers secured the match in the fifth set with a 15-10 victory over the Peacocks. The Jaspers scored the first three points of the set. However, since they had won the two previous sets, the Peacocks were not ready to concede defeat just yet. The Peacocks remained competitive, even taking the lead until the set was tied at eight. The Jaspers then embarked on an impressive run, scoring seven points and putting them within one point of victory. After two points from the Peacocks, the Jaspers sealed the match with a kill from Maike Bertens, assisted by Emmons.
Maike Bertens led the Jaspers' offense with 22 kills for the day, closely followed by Mikalah Curran with 18. On defense, both Dominique Velarde and Curran contributed 14 digs.
Manhattan plays again on Wednesday, November 1st, at 7:00 p.m. against Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn.
