EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Manhattan men's swimming and diving team finished eighth on the second day of the ECAC Championships.
In the preliminaries, Jonathan Carsen and Jack Martin qualified for the 100-yard butterfly by swimming with a prelim time of 53.37 and 55.32. In the preliminary 200-yard freestyle, Branden Deiss, Louis Quinn, and Jorge Flechas qualified for Manhattan. Deiss had the best time of 1:46.91.
For the preliminary 100-yard breaststroke, Joe Brennan and Vinny Tramontana qualified, with Brennan coming in second, breaking his school record with a finish time of 55.82. Andrew Lebak qualified for the 100-yard backstroke with a prelim time of 52.63, finishing 21st. Lastly, in a swim-off, Abelardo Cartagena qualified with a prelim time of 54.58.
For relay events, the men placed 9th and 16th in the 200-yard medley relay. The first team consisted of Lebak, Brennan, Martin, and Carsen with a final time of 1:34.96, .30 seconds behind eighth, scoring Manhattan 40 points. The second team consisted of Cartagena, Tramontana, Quinn, and Flechas with a final time of 1:47.91, earning Manhattan 22 points. The men also placed 13th in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team consisted of Deiss, Cartagena, Quinn, and Flechas. They swam with a final time of 7:39.04, earning the Jaspers 28 points.
Brennan placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke for individual races with a final time of 55.97, only .77 seconds behind second.
The Jaspers race again tomorrow, December 4, at the ECAC Winter Championships in East Meadow, N.Y.
