Manhattan Opens Home Slate Against VMI

Riverdale, NY –
 Manhattan will open the home portion of its schedule against VMI on Saturday, February 15 at 12:00 pm in the friendly confines of Gaelic Park.

Last Time Out
* The Jaspers dropped a hard-fought 9-4 decision to Navy this past Friday.
* Freshman Christian Lyons scored the first Manhattan goal of the year at the 8:40 mark at Navy.
* Junior Jake Nicolosi, senior Brandon Grinnell and sophomore Liam Walshe also notched scores.
* Walshe added an assist, while senior Rob Johnson also registered an assist with a team-best five ground balls.
* Junior Brendan Krebs made nine saves, while the defense forced 21 turnovers.

Manhattan-Navy Highlights


Manhattan-VMI Series History
* Manhattan dropped an 11-10 decision, despite three goals and two assists from senior Luke Hanson.
* Nicolosi and sophomore Tadhg O'Riordan added two scores, while Krebs made 15 stops between the pipes.
* Two years ago, the Jaspers posted a 12-7 win thanks to a pair of scores and one assist from Hanson.
* Manhattan leads the all-time series by an 11-5 count.

Home Openers
* The Jaspers have won each of their last two home openers, including against VMI by 12-7 count 

About VMI
* The Keydets will be making their 2020 debut on Saturday, and went 4-9 a year ago.
* VMI returns its top four scorers from a year ago in Johnny Daniel (25), Ryan Perouty (24), Josh Bass (15) and Jon Fant (14)

The Roster
* The Jaspers boast a roster of 40 student-athletes, which includes 26 returning letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad.
* Head Coach Drew Kelleher will welcome 14 student-athletes into the program in 2020. 

The Schedule
* Manhattan will play 14 games in 2020, including five at Gaelic Park.
* The Jaspers will host VMI, Bryant, Detroit Mercy, Monmouth and Siena.

Krebs Earns First Team All-MAAC Honors
* Krebs had a breakout campaign in 2019, winning six games, while ranking sixth nationally with a MAAC-leading .569 save percentage en route to earning First Team All-MAAC accolades.
* He also was 10th in the nation and second in the league with 13.29 saves per game, and third in the MAAC and 17th in the NCAA ranks with a 10.14 GAA.
* Krebs registered double-figures in saves on 12 occasions, including all eight MAAC games.

Lending A Helping Hand
* Hanson ranked second in the MAAC with 1.71 assists per game, in 2019 while his 25 helpers were also the second-best single-season total in Manhattan history.
* He has 52 career assists, which ranks sixth in the all-time program annals.
* Hanson also added 12 goals in finishing up with a team-leading 37 points.                  

If You're Not First, You're Last
* Manhattan led the nation in man-down defense at 83.3 percent (25-of-30) for the second-straight year in 2019.
* All told, over the last two years the Jaspers have killed off 82.4 percent (56-of-68) of penalties.

Close Calls
* Manhattan was 4-2 in games decided by one goal last year, with all six victories coming by three goals or less..

For Starters
* Last year, the Jaspers defeated Wagner 11-10 in notching their first season-opening victory since the 2008 season.
 * It also was just the fourth time in program history that Manhattan won its lidlifter.
