The Week That Was: The Jaspers shut out defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Fairfield by a 3-0 count last Wednesday, before clipping Canisius 2-1 on Saturday. Junior Brandon Joseph-Buadi led the way with a goal in each victory.
Last Time Out: Senior Adrien Awana converted a free kick in the 50th minute pushing Manhattan past host Canisius 2-1 in Buffalo, NY after Joseph-Buadi had tied it up in the first half with a low shot from in the box.
Fairfield Recap: The Jaspers scored a season-high three goals in besting the Stags. Joseph-Buadi opened the scoring in the 83rd minute, before senior Noah Amissah found the back of the net with 30 seconds to play. Junior Berti Fourrier then put the icing on the cake with his team-best fourth goal with just four seconds remaining..
Player Of The Week: Awana was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week following a standout performance last week. Awana was the centerpiece of a defense that allowed only one goal all week, including a shutout of Fairfield, before scoring the game-winning goal against Canisius.
In Goal: Senior Marcellin Gohier went 2-0 with a shutout last week and now has 22 wins and 15 shutouts in his three-year career.
Testing Yourself: Manhattan's six non-conference opponents are a combined 44-35-11 on the season. Three opponents (UConn, Rutgers, St. John's) have spent time ranked in the Top 25 by the United Soccer Coaches' Poll, with St. John's currently ninth. St. John's is also ranked third in RPI. Manhattan has played seven opponents in the Top 110 of the RPI.
One Is the Loneliest Number: The Jaspers have played nine one-goal games this season, going 4-5 in those games.
Awana Has Class: Awana was selected as one of 30 candidates for 2019 Men's Soccer Senior CLASS® Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ® the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. A 2018 All-MAAC first team selection, he will graduate this year with a degree in management and finished his first year in Riverdale with a 3.67 GPA, including a 3.87 mark in the spring semester. Series History: Dating back to 1977, the Peacocks lead the all-time series 31-12-1. However, Manhattan was won three of the last four meetings with Saint Peter's claiming last year's match-up by a scant 1-0 margin in Riverdale.
Scouting the Opposition:
- The Peacocks are 7-1 in MAAC play, leading the conference with 21 points.
- Saint Peter's holds a 10-5 overall mark and is currently ranked ninth in the East Region by the United Soccer Coaches.
- Dominic Laws leads the MAAC with 11 goals and six assists while Jordan Jowers is second on the club with five goals and five assists.
- Herman Wulff has started 10 games in net for the Peacock and owns an 8-2 record. He has made 41 saves and 1.27 GAA.
