Day 1 Results
Buffalo, NY - The Manhattan men's and women's swimming and diving teams shattered four school records combined in five events on the opening day of the 2018 MAAC Championships.
The women's squad toppled the 200 Medley Relay as well as the 800 Freestyle Relay, while the men's side reset the marks in the 800 Freestyle Relay. Freshman
Andre van Huyssteen (Paarl, South Africa / Paarl Boys) broke the 200-yard Freestyle in the aforementioned race. All four records are the first events to be broken in the 2018 calendar year.
The Jasper women began the meet with juniors
Megan Pagano and
Klaudia Nagrabska as well as senior
Alexandra Hutzler and sophomore
Kali Nembach in the 200 Medley Relay. The quartet finished sixth overall in 1:48.57. The time breaks the pervious mark of 1:50.10 back in 2015. Hutzler was also a part of that heat.
The 800 Freestyle Relay record was previously created in 8:04.52 last year. Hutzler, classmate
Audrey Corcoran, Nembach and fellow sophomore
Carolyn Crocker established the new record in 8:02.22 in the fourth event of the evening.
On the men's front, the 800 Freestyle Relay capped the evening's events. In the first leg, van Huyssteen set the tone with a time of 1:40.19, breaking the six year-old mark set by Robert Varieur '13. Sophomore
Tyler Dalton, junior
Evan Battisti and senior
Brandon Shields followed suit and finished in 6:54.95. That time replaces the 7:00.88 that occupied the best time in Manhattan history for the past five years.
After Day One, both teams have 44 points; the men sit in seventh place while the women are tied for eighth. Day Two begins with preliminaries at 10:00 am, with final times starting at 6:00 pm.
