Estero, FL - Senior
Rich Williams (Brooklyn, NY / Vermont Academy (VT)) scored a season-high 24 points while sophomore Pauly Paulicap (Elmont, NY / Harcum College) added a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds to go along with four blocks in Manhattan's 70-68 loss to Northern Illinois at the Gulf Coast Showcase (GCS).
Trailing by two with 1:31 to play, senior
Calvin Crawford (Middletown, NY / St. Thomas More (CT)) canned a three off a pass from classmate
Zavier Turner (Indianapolis, IN / Ball State) to give the Jaspers a scant one-point lead. However, the lead would be short-lived as Ball State would rally to take a two-point lead with 15 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, junior
Thomas Capuano (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY / Iona Prep) had his shot blocked out of bounds with 0.3 seconds remaining in giving Manhattan one final chance. Unfortunately, the Jaspers came up just short as Williams had his tip attempt go painfully wide.
Manhattan falls to 2-3 and will next travel to Fordham on Sunday, November 26 at 2:00 pm for the annual "Battle of the Bronx" while the Huskies improve to 3-2.
The Huskies jumped out to a 30-20 advantage with 7:38 to play until halftime and owned a seven-point advantage at the half thanks to shooting 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field.
After halftime, the Jaspers would come all the way back to take a pair of leads before dropping their second-straight heartbreaker. Levi Bradley scored a team-high 22 points, highlighted by the game winner, to pace NIU.
