RIVERDALE, NY – On Thursday, the Manhattan College women's basketball team held Rider, the highest-scoring team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) to just 38.5 percent (20-of-52) shooting. However, that solid defensive effort went for naught, as the Jaspers (5-9, 1-4 MAAC) dropped a 53-36 decision to the Broncs (10-4, 4-1 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium.
Rider scored the first 12 points of the game and held a 12-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. A Taylor Williams (Windsor, CT) trey brought Manhattan within six at 12-6 early in the second quarter before the Broncs extended their advantage to 29-10 at halftime.
The teams played an even third quarter, and Rider's cushion remained 19 points, 41-22, heading into the final period. After the Broncs extended the margin to a game-high 22 points at 49-27 with 6:41 remaining, the Jaspers rallied for seven straight points to trim their deficit to 49-34. A Sheridan Heine (Chandler, TX) jumper then capped the scoring in Rider's 53-36 victory.
Nyasha Irizarry (Brooklyn, NY) and Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA) led the Jaspers with six points apiece. Irizarry also recorded six rebounds, while Grimme added five boards and three assists. Julie Høier (Aabyhoej, Denmark) pulled down six rebounds, as well. Manhattan shot 25.5 percent (14-of-55) from the field, 13 percent (3-of-23) from long range, and 100 percent (5-of-5) at the free throw line.
Kamila Hoskova tallied a game-high 23 points for Rider. Julia Duggan had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds to go along with three assists, while Robin Perkins added nine points. Stella Johnson registered seven assists and six rebounds for the Broncs, who went 4-for-17 (23.5 percent) form three-point land and 9-for-19 (47.4 percent) at the charity stripe.
After playing four straight at home, the Jaspers hit the road for four of their next six contests. Manhattan visits Fairfield (5-8, 2-2 MAAC) at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
NOTES: The game was broadcast nationally on ESPN3…Manhattan was without leading scorer Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY), who is day-to-day with an ankle injury…The Jaspers used their 10th different starting lineup of the season, with Nicole Anderson (Hamden, CT) starting in Tatum's place…Grimme recorded her 141st career block in the game, tying her with Lori Toomey for second place on Manhattan's all-time list…This was the 43rd all-time meeting between the teams, and the Jaspers lead the series 29-14…Rider's 53 points were the second-lowest total for a Manhattan opponent this season…The Jaspers went perfect at the free throw line for the second time this season…Thursday's contest marked the end of Manhattan's season-long four-game homestand.
