TODAY'S GAME
The Jaspers (6-14, 2-9 MAAC) return home for the only time in a six-game stretch looking to complete a season sweep of Saint Peter's (3-17, 2-9 MAAC). This is the second meeting between the squads in eight days. Last Sunday, Manhattan notched a 69-65 win over the Peacocks in Jersey City. Both squads are coming off a loss at Rider. The Jaspers fell to the Broncs by a 73-64 count on Thursday night, while Saint Peter's dropped a 47-46 decision on Saturday. It's “Kid's Day Out” at Draddy Gymnasium, as nearly 1,000 students at local elementary schools will be in attendance.
ABOUT THE JASPERS
In its last outing, Manhattan suffered a 73-64 loss at Rider on Thursday night. Junior center Kayla Grimme recorded her fourth double-double of the season against the Broncs, and she leads the Jaspers in both scoring an rebounding. Grimme tallies 12.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, the fourth-most in the MAAC. She's also second in the league with 1.6 blocks per contest. Junior guard Amani Tatum registers 11.2 points per outing to go along with a team-best 4.6 assists and 3.2 steals a night. Freshman guard Gabby Cajou hands out 2.2 assists per game, and senior guard Maeve Parahus sinks 1.5 three-pointers per contest to pace the Jaspers. Junior guard Nyasha Irizarry, meanwhile, sinks 1.4 treys per outing. This is Manhattan's only home contest in a six-game span. The Jaspers begin their annual Western New York swing on Thursday night with a matchup at Canisius (6-15, 5-7 MAAC) that will be broadcast nationally on ESPN3.
ABOUT THE PEACOCKS
Saint Peter's (3-17, 2-9 MAAC) is looking to snap an eight-game losing streak. The Peacocks are coming off a 47-46 defeat at Rider on Saturday afternoon. Junior guard/forward Talah Hughes leads Saint Peter's in scoring with an average of 12.9 points per game. She also pulls down 5.7 rebounds per contest and is seventh in the MAAC in field goal percentage (.483). Junior forward Sajanna Bethea is the Peacocks' leading rebounder (5.9 rpg), and she adds 9.1 points per outing, second-most on the team. Sophomore guard Janelle Mullen, meanwhile, pours in 9.0 points a night to go along with a team-best 1.3 steals per game. Junior guard Alyssa Velles drains 1.6 three-pointers per contest, while freshman guard Sammy Lochner distributes 2.8 assists per outing to rank 10th in the league. After playing four straight against either Rider or Manhattan, Saint Peter's will host Marist (9-12, 6-5 MAAC) on Friday night.
SERIES HISTORY
Manhattan has beaten Saint Peter's in each of the last five meetings. The Jaspers posted a 69-65 victory over the Peacocks at the Yanitelli Center on Jan. 22. Last season at Draddy Gymnasium, Manhattan notched a 64-47 triumph on Jan. 21, 2016. Overall, the Jaspers and Peacocks are squaring off for the 83rd time, and Saint Peter's leads the all-time series 52-30. Manhattan, however, is 14-2 against the Peacocks since the start of the 2009-10 season.
LAST TIME OUT
Kayla Grimme became Manhattan's all-time blocks leader on Thursday night in the Jaspers' 73-64 loss to Rider at Alumni Gymnasium. Manhattan led 10-9 after the first quarter and ended the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 29-24 advantage into the locker room. Rider opened the third quarter on a 15-4 run to open up a 41-33 cushion, but the Jaspers rallied within four, 46-42, entering the fourth. However, the Broncs scored the first 16 points of the final period to go up 62-42. Manhattan trimmed its margin to seven at 69-62 before ultimately running out of time in a 73-64 defeat. Grimme had her second straight double-double with 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Amani Tatum finished with 14 points in her first game back after missing six contests due to an ankle injury.
KID'S DAY OUT
This is the seventh consecutive year in which the Jaspers are hosting “Kid's Day Out” at Draddy Gymnasium. “Kid's Day Out” is an initiative started by the MAAC where students at local elementary schools are invited on campus to attend a women's basketball game. Nearly 1,000 students at Community School 300, Equality Charter School, P.S. 86, P.S. 93, P.S. 107, P.S. 154 and St. Gabriel's School are expected to be in attendance. The students participated in a paragraph/picture contest about what “#playGREEN” means to them, with the winners from each class receiving t-shirts at halftime. There will also be a postgame autograph session with the Jaspers.
