PRINCETON, N.J. – The Larry Ellis Invitational concluded under pristine conditions at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium on Saturday, and the Manhattan College women's track & field team closed the meet with several stellar performances. Marisa Robbins (Goshen, N.Y.) set an outdoor school record in the pole vault, while Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) just missed establishing a new mark in the 400 meter hurdles.
Robbins cleared 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3½ inches) to break Jenna Daly's 11-year-old standard by 15 centimeters. She and Villanova's Kathleen McPhillips both went over 3.75 m on their first attempt, but McPhillips was credited with the win because of fewer misses at earlier heights. Cadet, meanwhile, placed second in the 400 hurdles with a 1:01.73 clocking. The school record in the event is 1:01.25, which was run by Lisa Edwards in 2000.
Lina Bengtson (Malmo, Sweden), meanwhile, won the discus for the second straight week. Her best effort on Saturday was 47.07 m (154'5). In addition, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) set a personal-best in the 100 meter hurdles. Her time of 13.84 seconds was good enough for second place in the event.
On the men's side, Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) secured fifth place in the 400 meters with a 47.97-second clocking. He was also on the Jaspers' 4x400 meter relay squad that placed fifth in 3:17.04. Ire Bozovicar (Potoki, Slovenia) added a third-place showing in the discus (49.90 m, 163'8), while Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.) was sixth in the shot put (14.01 m, 45'11¾). Meanwhile, Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) finished second in the triple jump (14.83 m, 48'8), and Hayden Clarke (Townsville, Australia) placed seventh in the long jump (6.87 m, 22'6½).
Up next for Manhattan is the Penn Relays, which begin on Wednesday. Those Jaspers who don't travel to Philadelphia for the 121st edition of the historic meet will participate in the Lions Invitational at the College of New Jersey next Saturday.
