Thursday Recap

NEW YORK – Sitting in first place after day one, the Manhattan College men's indoor track & field team ended up second overall at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships from the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Friday afternoon.  It marked the 12th consecutive year in which Manhattan finished third or higher at the Metropolitan Championships.  The Jasper women's squad, meanwhile, took fifth in the team standings.

Manhattan, which got a victory from Savio Paul (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the pole vault on Thursday, picked up two more on Friday.  Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) won the 800 meters in a time of 1:53.16, while Stefan Hoeller (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) and Alexandre Folacci (Tours, France) went 1-2 in the heptathlon. In second place by 38 points after six events, Hoeller collected 806 points with a time of 2:46.19 in the 1000 meters to give him a total score of 4829 and the win.  Folacci finished with 4770 points.

Also earning second-place finishes were Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) in the 500 meters (1:04.11), Clement Gicquel (Rennes, France) in the high jump (1.99 m, 6'6¼), Bobby Gebhard (Saddle River, N.J.) in the triple jump (14.69 m, 48'2½), and the 4x400 meter relay squad (3:20.97).  The Jaspers finished third in the 4x800 meter relay (7:55.49), while Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) was third in the mile (4:18.94).  Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.), who took second in the weight throw on Thursday, added a third-place showing in the shot put (14.92 m, 48'11½) on Friday.

In a great back-and-forth battle for the team title, Rutgers ended up on top with 167 points to Manhattan's 149.5.  Last year, the Jaspers were third behind both the Scarlet Knights and Southern Connecticut State.

Meanwhile, the women's squad collected 62 points to place fifth in the team standings for the second straight year.  St. John's won the women's team title with 168 points.

The top individual performer for the Jaspers was Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany), who took second in the 60 meter hurdles, just missing the ECAC-qualifying standard with a time of 8.87 seconds.  Horschig was also fourth in the long jump (5.55 m, 18'2½).  In addition, Manhattan grabbed second place in the 4x800 relay, as Alexa Roda (Staten Island, N.Y.), Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, N.J.), Kaitlyn Rose Smith (Effort, Pa.) and Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) recorded a 9:15.67 clocking.  Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.), meanwhile, posted a time of 56.66 seconds to grab third place in the 400 meters.

Next weekend, the Jaspers will send a handful of competitors back to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center for one of the most prestigious indoor meets in the nation—the Millrose Games.  Competition begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the marquee events being televised live on NBC Sports Network from 6-8 p.m.

Those members of the women's team not competing at the Millrose Games will head to Boston University for the St. Valentine Invitational, which gets underway next Friday at 2 p.m.
