NEW YORK – On Friday, the Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams returned to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center for the Metro Team Challenge. In the first team-scored meet of the year, the Jaspers placed sixth overall on the women's side and eighth among men's squads.
Blerim Pocesta (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the men's weight throw with a toss of 18.80 meters (61 feet, 8¼ inches). Gustave Menocal (Bronx, N.Y.), meanwhile, took eighth in the men's shot put, getting out to 12.31 m (40'4¾).
It was also a good day on the track for the Jaspers. Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) and Justin Alleyne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) went 4-6 in the 400 meters, posting times of 49.25 and 49.81 seconds, respectively. Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was sixth in the 600 meters (1:20.87) and Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.) grabbed sixth place in the 3000 meters (8:54.23). Manhattan also finished sixth in the distance medley relay, registering a 10:44.47 clocking.
Manhattan's 30 points were good for eighth in the team standings. Monmouth finished first overall with 109.5 points. Villanova's women collected 137 points to place first, while the Jaspers were sixth on the women's side with 29 points.
Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) was the top individual finisher among the Manhattan women. She took second in the weight throw with an effort of 16.95 m (55'7½). Charlene Pohl (Bisingen, Germany) and Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) were second and third in the long jump. Pohl got out to a distance of 5.57 m (18'3¼), while Horschig's best leap was 5.52 m (18'1½). Pohl also placed ninth in the high jump (1.55 m, 5'1). In the women's pole vault, Maddesen Weekes (Clifton Park, N.Y.) cleared 3.30 m (10'10) to finish in a tie for seventh place.
Kathy Cadet (Endicott, N.Y.) led Manhattan's efforts on the track. She grabbed fourth place in the 400 meters (57.70) and added an 11th-place showing in the 200 meters (25.80). Meanwhile, Paige Chapman (Abingdon, Md.) placed ninth in the 60 meters (7.84) and Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, N.J.) took ninth in the 800 meters (2:17.65).
The Metro Team Challenge was the first of two meets for the Jaspers this weekend. On Saturday, the men's squad heads to Princeton for the Tiger Open, which gets underway at 11 a.m.
