Jaspers Fall to Harvard After Conceding Three Goals in Second Half

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Manhattan men's soccer team dropped the tail end of its 2-game Ivy League weekend swing by falling to Harvard, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.

After the two sides played to a scoreless first half, Harvard sophomore Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu opened the scoring in the 49th minute, when he pounced on a rebound in the Manhattan box and slid it past Jaspers sophomore keeper Alex Coates McDowall. Crimson senior forward Hiroki Kobayashi saw his initial attempt stopped by Coates McDowall, but his teammate was in the perfect spot to give Harvard a 1-0 edge.

In the 60th minute, Crimson junior defender Mark Ashby put his side up by 2. Freshman midfielder Sam Brown was credited with an assist on the play. Just under 10 minutes later, junior forward Jake Freeman made it 3-0, courtesy of an assist by Sam Brown, his second helper of the match.

The Jaspers had a number of opportunities to find goal in each half, but came up empty. Toward the end of the first half, the Jaspers had a 7-minute stretch where they had three chances to go up a goal, but could not finish. In the 38th minute, senior Andrew Santos took an attempt at target, but his effort was saved by Harvard junior goalkeeper Evan Mendez. One minute later, senior captain Tommy Amos saw his effort go wide. With two minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore forward Daniel Laguna Kennedy's attempt went high.

In the second half, Laguna Kennedy and Amos had chances stopped by Mendez.

Despite allowing three goals, Coates McDowall made 10 saves for Manhattan, as his strong play continues this fall.

Two Manhattan players were cautioned in the contest, with Santos and senior Reese Akers receiving yellow cards in the 36th and 44th minutes, respectively.

The Jaspers have now completed their season-opening 5-game road trip with a 1-3-1 record. The squad will return home for a meeting with La Salle on Friday, Sept. 26. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
