NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Manhattan men's soccer team played Yale to a goalless draw on Friday night in the opening match of the Jaspers 2-game Ivy League weekend swing. After neither team scored in the first 90 minutes, the game went to extra time. Although each team had chances in the two overtime periods, neither side could find goal.
Attempts were the story of the game, as each team had its share of opportunities, forcing both goalkeepers into action. Manhattan sophomore starting goalkeeper Alex Coates McDowall made six saves on the evening en route to earning his second clean sheet of the season. Yale sophomore starting goalkeeper Ryan Simpson also stopped six shots and posted his second shutout of the season.
Yale owned the best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes, as freshman Ollie Iselin blasted a shot off the crossbar from 25 yards out in the 41st minute.
The Jaspers held an edge in possession and creativity in the second half. Sophomore forward Daniel Laguna Kennedy, freshman Ajani Phillips, junior captain Alex Shackley, senior forward Eugene Heerschap and freshman Moosah Khanat all saw their efforts get stopped by Simpson or go astray.
Manhattan's best chance of the second half came off the foot of winger Kristian Alexieff in the 76th minute. The junior's attempt at goal from 25 yards out went over the Yale keeper before clanging off the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.
Manhattan had the better of chances in extra time, but strong keeping and defense kept the Jaspers off the board.
"We had come off a long break and started slowly in the first half, but displayed composure, made adjustments and played very well in the second half," said head coach Jorden Scott. "We feel like tonight's game will give us momentum heading into Sunday's match."
The Jaspers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Harvard Crimson in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
