Jaspers Top Ottawa 65-58 In Canadian Opener

MONTREAL, Que. – The Manhattan College women's basketball team began its Canadian trip with a 65-58 victory over the University of Ottawa on Monday night at Champlain College.

After a tight first quarter that saw the Jaspers build a 10-8 lead, Manhattan outscored Ottawa 21-8 in the second quarter to extend its cushion to 15 points, 31-16, at intermission.  The Jaspers then led 52-36 after three quarters before the Gee-Gees mounted a comeback effort in the fourth.  However, Manhattan held on down the stretch, posting a 65-58 triumph.

It was a balanced scoring effort for the Jaspers, as five different players tallied at least seven points.  Shayna Ericksen (Long Valley, N.J.) led the way with 14 points, while Nicole Anderson (Hamden, Conn.) had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Former Canisius player Stephanie MacDonald registered a game-high 16 points for Ottawa.

The Jaspers are now 2-0 all-time against the Gee-Gees, who they also beat on their previous Canadian tour in 2010.  Manhattan heads to Ottawa for a matchup with Carleton University on Tuesday night.
