LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - The Jaspers concluded the first round of the MAAC Tournament in first place with a team score of 310 (+22), five strokes ahead of the second place Saint Peter's Peacocks. The tournament, which is being held at Disney's Palm Golf Course, will resume on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. with round two action.
Four Manhattan golfers finished within one stroke of each other, with senior Jonathan Feuer leading the way. He handed in a four-over 76, placing him fourth overall after 18 holes. "It was all about just staying focused; we have the experience factor," said Feuer. "I was just trying to hit fairways and then put myself in good position to hit greens."
Sophomore James Edgeworth posted a (+5) 77, finishing just one stroke behind Feuer. His score was tied for the fifth lowest of any golfer in the first round.
Sophomore Michael Giannico and senior Chris Calabro also turned in low scores on day one. Giannico shot a (+6) 78 and Calabro a (+7) 79 to help the team lead the pack following the first round of competition.
"Our team goal was to put up four scores in the 70s on day one, because we knew that would keep us in contention," said senior Calabro. "The course definitely played more difficult as the day went on because the ground got firmer as the weather got hotter, so it was harder to hold approach shots. We're looking to continue what we did today in tomorrow's round."
The Jaspers will tee off in the final five groups in round two on Saturday morning. Senior Paul Toohey will lead the team out, as he is scheduled to tee off shortly after 9:00 a.m.
