WORCESTER, Mass. - Seniors Janie Schlauder and Martine Diamond connected to produce the only score of the game, coming with four minutes left in regulation, as Manhattan defeated Holy Cross 1-0 at Smith Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The first half went by with each team having a handful of scoring chances. Each team put two shots on goal and Holy Cross managed four corner kicks to Manhattan's two.
The pace quickened in the second half as the Jaspers fired off four shots in the first 10 minutes of the half.
With 32 minutes remaining, Holy Cross had a prime opportunity to get on the board. After a long through ball from midfield, the Crusaders' Annie Galvin fired one on goal that Jasper goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny knocked away. The rebound went straight back to Galvin, who had skirted past Skonieczny. Galvin slid one toward the open net but Shannon Barry was there to clear the ball before it made it to the goal line, keeping the game scoreless.
With the clock winding down in regluation, the Jaspers connected a series of beautiful passes leading up to Schlauder's goal. In her first collegiate match, Tara Teal fed Martine Diamond on the far side, who crossed one to Schlauder in the box. Schlauder then snuck one under the crossbar to give Manhattan the 1-0 edge.
Skonieczny made three saves in the team's first shutout of the season. The win snapped a two-game skid for the Jaspers, who evened their record at 2-2.
Manhattan returns home on Friday, September 6 when the Jaspers will host Columbia for a 7 p.m. match.
