Lady Jaspers Downed By Louisville

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y.- The Manhattan women's lacrosse team fell to Louisville 20-2 Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park.

A rematch of last season's opener, the Cardinals (6-0) came out firing and never trailed the Lady Jaspers (2-4) in the contest. A truly impressive performance, Louisville held advantages over Manhattan in shots (33-14), ground balls (25-14), draw controls (19-5) and free-position shots (3-5/1-8).

For Manhattan, senior midfielder Phelicia VanOverbeke and junior attacker Chrissy Gutenberger each netted goals.

Getting on the board quickly with tallies from three different players, Louisville took a 3-0 at the 27:51 mark of the first period on the first of three goals by Lianne Bobal. The Lady Jaspers would respond, cutting the deficit to 3-1 when VanOverbeke found the back of the net with 26:41 remaining.

Showing off their offensive prowess, the Cardinals retaliated with six unanswered tallies in a six-minute span to build a 9-1 lead with 19:49 left in the half. Gutenberger picked up her eighth goal of the year for Manhattan on a free-position opportunity to make it 9-2 at the 9:31 mark but Louisville added two more scores to take an 11-2 advantage into the break.

In the second period, the Cardinals would add nine more goals, three from Emily Dashiell, and two each from Liz Lovejoy and Bergan Foley to cruise to the 20-2 victory. Lovejoy led all offensive players with five goals on the afternoon.

Between the pipes, Louisville's Ashley Herbst made three saves in the victory, with Manhattan sophomore goalkeeper Julia DiBernardo recording seven saves in the defeat.

The Lady Jaspers look to get back on track Wednesday, when they host Long Island University in a 4 p.m. contest at Gaelic Park.
