Manhattan (2-13)
Manhattan looks to shake its 13 game skid, since earning season opening wins over NJIT and Penn. The Jaspers contest with Florida Atlantic will mark their third game in the last five days. Manhattan is coming off a 65-59 conference loss to Marist with the absence of freshman point guard Michael Alvarado who has missed the last two games with an injury.
Sophomore guard George Beamon has anchored the Jaspers' scoring attack this season, averaging 15.5 points per game which ranks fifth in the MAAC. Beamon has pulled down 7.3 rebounds per contest, a figure which is tied for sixth in the MAAC. Beamon leads Manhattan with 20 steals and he has posted a 43.1% field goal shooting mark.
Graduate transfer Demetrius Jemison continues to increase his contributions with six starts under his belt, since receiving a graduate transfer waiver from the NCAA on Dec. 10. Jemison is coming off a season-high 18 point performance against Marist as he shot 7-for-12 from the field and knocked down 4-of-5 free-throws. The 6'8" 240-pound Birmingham, Ala. native is averaging 10.8 points and 7.3 rebounds, while shooting 49.1% from the floor.
Sophomore guard Mohamed Koita is working his way back into the mix since he missed the first 11 games rehabbing from injuries. The Cergy, France native has started three of his four appearances. He is coming off a five point, three assist and two rebound effort in 23 minutes against Marist on Sunday.
Manhattan will play three of its next four games at home in Draddy Gymnasium, before it embarks on a four game road series with contests at Fairfield (Jan. 28), Marist (Jan. 30), Siena (Feb. 4) and Iona (Feb. 7).
Florida Atlantic (11-6)
Florida Atlantic has won eight of its last 10 games, picking up notable victories over Mississippi State (Nov. 30) and South Florida (Dec. 4). One of the Owls' last two losses came against MAAC member Siena (72-69) on Dec. 13 in Albany, N.Y. Florida Atlantic is also 5-1 at FAU Arena this season.
The Owls are led in scoring by Greg Gantt who is averaging 14.9 points, starting all 17 contests. The 6'2" 205-pound native of Gainesville, Fla. is shooting 48.2% from the field, and he leads the team with 36 3-point field goals.
Owls' sophomore Raymond Taylor has contributed 10.5 points per game with 29 treys. Junior Alex Tucker holds a 8.2 scoring average, and he leads Florida Atlantic with 75 assists.
Florida Atlantic's top producing big men are Kore White, a 6'8" 245-pound sophomore transfer from Marshall, and Brett Royster a 6'8" 235-pound senior forward. White has recorded 9.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest, while Royster is averaging 7.9 points, a team-high 5.5 rebounds and 61 blocked shots.
The Owls' are coached by Mike Jarvis, former St. John's head coach, who is in his third season.
