Women's Results

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - It was hot and humid on Saturday afternoon, but Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) didn't let the adverse weather conditions faze him one bit.  Lundgren placed first overall to lead the Manhattan College men's cross country squad to a fourth-place team finish at the Fr. Victor F. Leeber, S.J. Invitational on the campus of Fairfield University.  The Manhattan women also placed fourth.

Despite the unseasonably warm conditions, Lundgren's time of 26:19.43 over the 8000-meter course gave him the easy victory, more than 40 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Fairfield's Benjamin Heslin.  Manhattan's next two finishers ran together for almost the entire race and were separated by just a second.  Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) placed 15th in 27:48.36, while Tom Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) was 16th in 27:49.38.  Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished in a time of 28:33.53, good enough for 26th place, and Billy Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.) was Manhattan's fifth scorer.  Wilkens finished 32nd in a time of 29:00.19.  Freshmen Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) (44th, 29:27.32) and Rob Tassey (Seaford, N.Y.) (49th, 29:42.71) rounded out the Jaspers' top seven.

Overall, Manhattan earned 90 points in the team standings.  Host Fairfield won the meet with 32 points.

On the women's side, Manhattan entered just five healthy runners, meaning all scores counted.  Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the Lady Jaspers' top finisher for the third time in as many races this season.  Jangsten took fifth over the 5000-meter course, finishing in 19:43.63.  Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed 12th in 20:05.61, while Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) ran the best race of her collegiate career, finishing 23rd in 20:28.94.  Manhattan's other finishers were Meghan Marro (Cherry Hill, N.J.) (31st, 20:58.28) and Jelena Rankovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) (49th, 21:42.38).

Manhattan notched a total of 102 team points in the women's race, good enough for fourth place.  Sacred Heart finished with 29 points to win the women's competition.

The squad will have next week off before returning to action at the annual Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park on Oct. 8.  The meet gets underway at 1:30 p.m.
