Behind a school record eight goals from Danielle Vivonetto , the Navy women's lacrosse team topped visiting Manhattan in a 19-6 victory Thursday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Chrissy Gutenberger, Caralyn Hickey and Elizabeth Dugan each tallied two goals for the Jaspers (now 1-5). Keri Morrison and Phelicia VanOverbeke chipped in with an assist each.
Morrison picked up 5 ground balls and caused 2 turnovers. Breana Leonard picked up 3 ground balls. Manhattan was outshot 31-17. Manhattan's Julia DiBernardo had 6 saves in goal.
Navy opened the afternoon with four unanswered goals, including two inside the first 1:57, and looked to be off to the races early, but ran into some uncharacteristic struggles taking care of the ball. Navy turned it over a season-high 18 times over the first 30 minutes, allowing the Jaspers to stay close.
Navy led 8-4 after a Manhattan goal opened the scoring in the early stages of the second half, before embarking on an 11-0 run, which put the game out of the reach. The Jaspers' Dugan scored just 62 seconds out of the break and then were held without a goal for the next 27 minutes and 55 seconds before netting a pair of late scores to create the final margin.
Manhattan has a long break now before its next match, Monday, March 29th, when it hosts UMBC at Gaelic Park. The game starts at 3:30 p.m.
