Scouting Report
Manhattan (2-7)
Manhattan is in the midst of playing five straight games in the metropolitan area, since returning from the 2010 Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. The Jaspers are coming off a 73-59 loss to Fordham in the 103rd "Battle of the Bronx", which extended the team's winless streak to seven games.
The Jaspers have relied on the production of their underclassmen and newcomers to help offset several injuries. Freshman point guard Michael Alvarado leads Manhattan and ranks eighth in the MAAC in scoring (12.9 ppg) and he is ninth in the league averaging 3.0 assists per contest. He also ranks fourth in the conference in free-throw percentage (85.7%).
Sophomore guard George Beamon has adopted a larger role after playing behind three senior guards during his rookie campaign. The product of Roslyn, N.Y. has scored in double-figures in seven of nine appearances this season and is ninth in the MAAC averaging 12.8 points. Beamon is coming off his team-leading third double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds at Fordham.
Freshman forward Rhamel Brown and junior guard Kidani Brutus have also been major factors for the Jaspers this season. Brown is leading the MAAC with 21 blocks, including five in each of his last two games. The talent from Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn is fourth in the conference in rebounding (8.1 rpg) and he has averaged 7.0 points per game. Brutus is the only other Jasper beside Alvarado to start all nine games this season. He is averaging 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and has knocked down a team-high 15 3-pointers.
Manhattan returns to Riverdale on Dec. 18 for its contest with Hofstra at Draddy Gymnasium. The Jaspers then travel to Bowling Green and Florida Atlantic, before resuming MAAC play after the New Year.
Binghamton (1-6)
The Bearcats visit Draddy Gymnasium riding a six game losing streak, most recently falling to Hofstra 89-85 in overtime in Vestal, N.Y. on Wednesday. Binghamton has dropped all six of its contests since earning a season opening victory at Colgate (62-60) on Nov. 13.
Binghamton is 1-3 on the road this year and is led in scoring by senior forward Greer Wright. The 6'8" 215-pound product of Boynton Beach, Fla. is averaging 17.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Wright is coming off a 28 point effort on 9-for-17 shooting in the Bearcats loss to Hofstra.
The Bearcats are also getting double-figures from senior guard Chretien Lukusa who is averaging 10.3 points and 34.1 minutes over seven appearances this season. Fellow senior Mahamoud Jabbi, a 6'7" forward, is the Bearcats top rebounder (5.4 rpg) and he tops the team with nine blocks this season.
Binghamton posted a 13-18 overall record last season, including an 8-8 mark in the America East. The Bearcats bring back four starters and nine letterwinners under the direction of interim head coach Mark Macon who is in his second season.
