Manhattan (2-0)
Despite working with an under-manned, injury plagued roster, Manhattan is off to a strong 2-0 start behind the solid play of underclassmen and newcomers. Sophomore guard George Beamon is leading the team in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (10.0 rpg), averaging a double-double through two games.
Freshman point guard Michael Alvarado has had a near flawless transition into the college game as he boasts 15.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two starts. Kidani Brutus, a junior transfer from the Bronx, is coming off a double-double effort (14 points, 10 rebounds), which helped lift the Jaspers to a home opening win over Penn on Wednesday.
Senior forward Andrew Gabriel and freshman Rhamel Brown have anchored the Jaspers efforts down low. Gabriel is averaging 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. The Brooklyn native went off for 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting in Manhattan's opening victory at NJIT. Brown is coming off a perfect shooting performance going 5-for-5 from the field for 10 points against Penn. Brown corralled eight rebounds in the contest.
The Jaspers have been efficient on the offensive side of the court this season. As a team, Manhattan is shooting 43.8% from the field and 74.6% at the free-throw line. Defensively, the Jaspers have limited their opponents to 38.9% shooting, including a 29.2% mark from downtown.
Long Island (2-0)
The Blackbirds also enter the contest with an unblemished ledger after winning its first two games against Norfolk State and Texas State. Long Island has posted 89.0 points per game and is led by senior guard Kyle Johnson who has averaged 16.0 points in two starts.
Jamal Olasewere, a 6'7" sophomore center, is also averaging double-figures with 14.5 points per contest. Olasewere has received help in the blocks by fellow 6'7" sophomore forward Julian Boyd who leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per contest, which goes along with a 9.0 scoring averaged.
Long Island earned its first victory of the season in a 23 point rout of Norfolk State (87-64) in its home opener on Nov. 12. The Blackbirds are coming off a 91-67 victory at Texas State where they were led by Johnson's 22 points.
The Blackbirds were selected third in the NEC Preseason Poll. Long Island returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last season.
