RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Metropolitan Championships traditionally mark the start of championship season for the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams. And while the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships are still three weeks away, Friday's meet at Van Cortlandt Park served as a successful tune-up for the conference meet. Running without its top two runners, the men's squad placed sixth overall, while the women's team ran a full squad for the first time this season and finished seventh.
With Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) missing the race due to illness, Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) emerged as Manhattan's top finisher on the men's side. D'Emic finished 40th in a time of 27:23. Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) and Tom Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) ran together for most of the 8000-meter race. Corbin ended up 51st in a time of 27:50, with Daly placing 52nd in 27:52. Billy Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.) took 61st in a time of 28:10, and Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) was Manhattan's fifth scorer. Voorheis finished in 28:17, good enough for 66th place. Rounding out the Jaspers' top seven were John Gaffney (Rutherford, N.J.) (84th, 28:46) and Joe Pluhowski (East Patchogue, N.Y.) (93rd, 29:25). Overall, Manhattan collected 206 team points.
On the women's side, Manhattan's top finisher was Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden), who completed the 5000-meter course in 19:23, good enough for 15th place. Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed 31st in a time of 19:45, while Jelena Rankovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) took 55th in 20:47. Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) was the Lady Jaspers' fourth finisher, claiming 57th in 20:47. Christine Cristobal (Dix Hills, N.Y.), a transfer from Quinnipiac University, made her Manhattan debut on Friday and just edged Meghan Marro (Cherry Hill, N.J.) for 62nd place. Cristobal ran a time of 20:53, while Marro finished in 20:55. Stephanie Dufort (Clifton Park, N.Y.) completed the Lady Jaspers' top seven. She placed 101st in 22:10. The Manhattan women earned 191 points.
Columbia won both team titles. On the men's side, the Lions placed nine runners in the top 20, including all of the top four, to finish with 17 team points. Columbia's women edged Rutgers 41-46.
Manhattan's next meet will be the MAAC Championships, which will be held at Hamonasset State Park in Madison, Conn., on Saturday, Oct. 30.
