MADISON, Conn. - On a cold and windy afternoon at Hammonasset Beach State Park, the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams ran in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships on Friday afternoon. The men's team collected 144 points to finish fifth, while the women's squad placed eighth with 205 points.
Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) once again emerged as Manhattan's top male runner. He finished 14th overall in a time of 25:15.8. Running in his first MAAC Championships, Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) completed the 8000-meter course in 26:19.1, good enough for 33rd place. Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) was 40th in a time of 26:26.3, while Tom Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) took 51st in 26:42.9. Billy Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.) ran with Daly most of the way and ended up 53rd in a time of 26:44.6. Rounding out the Jaspers' top seven were Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) (84th, 27:32.0) and Brian King (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) (92nd, 27:51.8).
In the women's race, Manhattan was without the injured Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who had been the Lady Jaspers' No. 2 runner in each of their first four meets this season. Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden) claimed the top spot on the women's team, placing 19th in a time of 22:34.6. Jelena Rankovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) finished 42nd overall, completing the 6000-meter course in 23:25.0. Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) was 56th in 23:59.3, and Meghan Marro (Cherry Hill, N.J.) captured 59th place in a time of 24:03.6. Christine Cristobal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was Manhattan's fifth scorer. She ended up 69th in 24:24.3. Katie O'Connell (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Stephanie Dufort (Clifton Park, N.Y.) completed Manhattan's top seven. O'Connell finished 102nd in 26:10.8, while Dufort placed 103rd in a time of 26:16.1.
Iona captured both team titles. On the men's side, the Gaels claimed five out of the first six places to win their 20th consecutive MAAC Championship. Iona placed six women in the top 10 to earn its seventh straight women's crown.
In addition, three men and four women were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. On the men's side, Daly, Wilkens and Joe Pluhowski (East Patchogue, N.Y.) were recognized for their work in the classroom, while Dufort, Jangsten, Erin Bayer (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) were named to the women's All-Academic Team. To be eligible for All-Academic accolades, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters at their institution and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher.
Both squads return to Hammonasset Beach State Park for the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 14. The women will run over the same course as Friday's meet, while the men's race will be over a 10-kilometer distance.
