RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Crusaders' senior Shelby Stand scored a pair of goals leading Holy Cross (2-0) to a 2-1 victory over the Manhattan women's soccer team on Friday at Gaelic Park in the Lady Jaspers' home opener. Manhattan junior forward Caroline Morse recorded her team leading third goal of the season late in the second half, but the Lady Jaspers simply ran out of time to mount a comeback.
"This was a disheartening loss," explained fifth year head coach Sean Driscoll. " We played very well and had enough chances to win this game. Have to give credit to Holy Cross for finding a way to win."
Stand wasted little time before she got the Crusaders on the scoreboard. In the eighth minute, the forward from Douglas, Mass finished on an unsettled situation in the box off a feed from sophomore Katherine Donnelly. Holy Cross preserved the edge and carried its one goal lead into halftime.
Manhattan controlled possession for the majority of the second half. The Lady Jaspers outshot Holy Cross by a 13-1 margin, but it was the Crusaders' lone attempt which proved to be the decisive goal. It was in the 77th minute when Donnelly set up Stand again, who then capitalized on a fast break opportunity. Stand got behind her defender and sent one across goal, out of the reach from Lady Jaspers goalkeeper Caitlin Trupiano.
Trupiano played the second half splitting time in net for the third straight contest with freshman Kara Davis. Davis recorded two saves over the first 45 minutes of action.
The Lady Jaspers peppered Holy Cross with 19 shots in the match, overwhelming the Crusaders who launched just five. Manhattan eventually got on the scoreboard, but with just 12 seconds remaining. Morse took a beautiful feed in the box from Courtney McMahon, and fired a shot past Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Mary Ferketic. Ferketic played all 90 minutes in net and made two saves to earn her first victory of the 2009 campaign.
Manhattan (1-2) looks to erase its two game skid on Sunday when the Lady Jaspers begin a three game road trip at Fairleigh Dickinson. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. in Teaneck, N.J.
