Women's Soccer Escapes with Double Overtime Win at Providence

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Senior forward Christine Reina posted the game winning goal in the 116th minute to lift the Manhattan women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Providence (3-1) this afternoon. Lady Jaspers' co-captain Courtney McMahon connected on her first goal of the season in the 54th minute to erase an early deficit and force overtime. Caitlin Trupiano recorded a career-high eight saves in net and helped Manhattan (2-1) to its second win.

“We put on a good performance today,” explained head coach Sean Driscoll. “We battled well. I give a lot of credit to our defense. Our goalkeeper and back three were exceptional. This was a great road win over a BIG EAST program.”

Providence utilized Courtney Collins goal in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 advantage into the half. Collins accepted the assist off a free kick from senior midfielder Kimberly Pine and sent a header into the back of the net.

The Lady Jaspers responded with 53:28 on the clock when McMahon blasted a shot from the top of the box past Friars goalkeeper Caitlin Walker. The score marked McMahon's 27th career point and fifth goal.

Manhattan's stingy defense anchored by Brittany Duhamel and Jill Beauchamp held Providence scoreless for the final minutes of regulation to force overtime. The Friars bombarded Manhattan with 24 shots, 17 during the second half and overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Reina broke the 1-1 tie with 115:36 on the clock when she finished on the Lady Jaspers sole shot attempt in overtime. Reina gathered a loose ball resulting from a scrum in the front of the goal, and punched it into the back of the net. The goal marked Reina's first of the season.

The contest was the inaugural meeting between these two programs, and the second win in Manhattan women's soccer history over a BIG EAST opponent.

The Lady Jaspers return to action on Friday evening for its match with Lafayette under the lights at Gaelic Park. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
