RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College women's soccer team notched its first victory of the 2008 campaign edging Northeastern 1-0 this evening in Brookline, Mass. Lady Jasper senior co-captain Brittany Duhamel connected on the game winning goal in the 31st minute of action to secure the win. Caitlin Trupiano, a junior goalkeeper, delivered a solid performance in net posting her first shutout of the season.
It was an even battle midway through the first half as both defenses stood strong. Then with 30:55 on the clock, Duhamel notched what proved to lone goal of the contest when she lofted a shot into the back of the net, thanks in part to a feed from junior midfielder Tracey Colantonio.
The Lady Jaspers locked down defensively in the second stanza and held off the attacking Huskies who fired 11 shots in the period. Northeastern outshot Manhattan 15-6 in the contest.
Trupiano was brilliant between the pipes during her 2008 debut. The Massapequa native registered five saves over 90 minutes of work to preserve the shutout effort. Northeastern's Stephanie Gordon posted four saves on the evening.
The victory marks the Lady Jaspers' fourth season opening road win in program history. Manhattan returns to action on Thursday for its home opener when it hosts Stony Brook under the lights at Gaelic Park. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
