Providence, R.I. ? On the second day of the Brown University Tournament, Manhattan beat the Howard University Lady Bison in the consolation game. Senior Caitlin Flood passed a career milestone as her 27 points today pushed her past 1,000 career points as a Lady Jasper. The Lady J's finished the weekend 1-1 after their victory.
In the first half, the Lady Jaspers rushed out to an early 9-1 lead within the first four minutes. But the Lady Bison were not going to just roll over for them as they went on a 13-5 run in the next eight minutes to tie the score at 14. Soon after, sophomore Michelle Pacheco scored four points consecutively after hitting a lay-up she turned around to steal the ball and hit another lay-up to spark the Lady J's run. Manhattan would go on an outstanding 20-4 run to close out the first half. Flood was perfect from the free throw line as she went 5-5 in the first half and had nine points. Senior Gabrielle Cottrell led all scorers at the break with 13 points, going 4-7 from the field.
With a large lead, Manhattan knew Howard was going to come out gunning to cut down that lead. But the Lady J's held strong as they stayed right with the Lady Bison in the second half. With 17:47 left, Flood was fouled going to the basket, which put her on the free throw line with 998 career points recorded. Ater draining the two free throws, Flood reached the 1,000 point plateau. Manhattan never let Howard get back in the game as they cruised on the rest of the game to win 76-51.
Cottrell tallied a double-double as she dropped 21 points and grabbed 10 boards on the day. Pacheco finished the game with nine points as she was a perfect 4-4 from the field. Senior Aubrie Dellinger went 3-6 from behind the arc as she finished with nine points and Joann Nwafili contributed five points, six rebounds and four assists on the game.
Flood is the first Lady Jasper to reach 1,000 points since it was done by Rosalee Mason in 2004. Flood, a Blairstown, N.J. native is playing her fourth year in the Green and White. She was selected as a Second Team Preseason All-MAAC this season and has averaged 10.7 points per game before this season. She led the team in scoring last season and is averaging over 15.0 points per game this season.
The Lady Jaspers will be in action on Friday, when they open their MAAC regular season on the road against Siena College. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
