Riverdale, N.Y. (May 9, 2006)- Senior Matt Springer, in his first collegiate start, kept the Saint Francis-N.Y. batters off balance for his entire outing, allowing no earned runs over a career-long 6.1 innings of work, as Manhattan downed the Terriers, 10-4, this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park in the last meeting between the interboro rivals. The Jaspers improve to 23-20 on the season.

Saint Francis got on the board first, taking advantage of a Manhattan error to push across a run, and plated another unearned run in the fifth on a passed ball to lead, 2-0, going into the bottom of the sixth.

In the sixth, the Jaspers evened the score at 2-2 as a John Fitzpatrick double scored Matt Rizzotti, who had led off the inning with a single, and a Nick Derba sacrifice fly plated Fitzpatrick.

Manhattan would take the lead in the seventh, taking advantage of five Terrier errors to score three runs.

After Saint Francis scored a run in the top of the eighth to make the score 5-3, the Jaspers blew the game open with a five run bottom of the eighth. The big blow came from Ryan Marcoux, who's double to right center cleared the bases, which had been loaded with two outs.

The Terriers pushed across a run in the ninth to provide the final margin.

Springer scattered five hits while striking out four before giving way to Rene Guerra, who struck out four over 1.2 innings to earn the win.

Manhattan returns to action tomorrow, May 10, hosting Sacred Heart at Van Cortlandt Park, with the first pitch slated for 12 noon.
