Riverdale, NY (May 6, 2006) - This afternoon the Lady Jaspers played a MAAC conference double header against Niagara (23-21, 6-8 MAAC) and honored their four seniors: Tina Buyea, Kiera Fox, Coleen Horgan, and Jill Medea in between games. Manhattan (26-22, 6-8 MAAC) dropped their first game 8-5, but came back to take the second game 10-5.
In the first match-up between the Lady Jaspers and the Purple Eagles junior Liz Strein continued her clutch hitting going 3 for 5. Niagara jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Manhattan came back in the 3rd inning with Strein's second leadoff single of the game. Junior Stefanie Gozdziewski reached first on an error on a sac bunt, and Strein and Gozdziewski both advanced to 3rd and 2nd. Lyndzie Phillips singled in the first Manhattan run. Kiera Fox followed with a sac fly RBI plating Gozdziewski. Later in the inning Devon Gustafson singled in 2 runs. The game was tied 4-4, and in the 7th inning Manhattan ignited a 2 out rally. Gustafson lined out to center with the bases loaded to end the inning. Niagara scored four runs in the top of the 8th. Jill Medea (16-11) was the hard luck loser of game one.
Manhattan came back in game two for the seniors with a win over Niagara 10-5. Strein once again proved to be the offensive powerhouse with another multi-hit game. Gozdziewski, Gustafson, and Kerry Cook also led Manhattan with multi-hit performances at the plate. After Niagara again jumped out to a first inning lead Manhattan answered in the bottom of the second with a grand slam by Danielle Just. In the 2nd inning Gozdziewski scored Strein with a 2 out single. Cook started the 4th inning off with a triple and scored on a Strein single. Cook and Strein started things off again in the 6th with back to back hits. Fox doubled them in and later scored. Junior Kristin Gelsleichter (8-5) earned the win in the circle for Manhattan. Liz Pennino came in to close the 7th.
Manhattan's last regular season game is tomorrow at Gaelic Park against Canisius at 9 and 11 AM.
