GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Riverdale, NY (April 6,2006)- Manhattan's offense proved to be the winning factor in the non-conference sweep against Monmouth University at Gaelic Park this afternoon. In the first game, the Lady Jaspers were led by seniors Kiera Fox and Tina Buyea, who both provided homeruns. Senior Jill Medea was the winning pitcher scattering five hits and only letting up one run in the first contest. In the second game, junior Kristin Gelsleichter and junior Elizabeth Pennino combined to let up only two runs and closed the door in the series.
In the first inning of the first game, with two runners on, Fox stepped up to the plate and delivered a three run homerun to set the tone for the Lady Jaspers. Manhattan gained momentum again in the bottom of the sixth inning when Buyea hit a towering solo homerun to dead center field making the final score 4-1. Junior Liz Strein, freshman Lyndzie Phillips and Devon Gustafson each added a hit in the first contest. Medea (9-7) went the distance only letting up one run and scattering five hits in the full seven innings.
Offense proved to be the key ingredient, once again, in the second game. Manhattan tallied nine hits and ten runs in five innings, putting the Lady Hawks away. Freshman Danielle Just went 3-3 with two RBIs leading the Lady Jaspers, while junior Liz Strein continued to be an offensive threat going 2-2 with two RBIs. In the third inning, junior Stefanie Gozdziewski ripped a shot down the third baseline scoring two more Lady Jaspers. Junior Kristin Gelsleichter (2-3) pitched four complete innings giving up only one run. Reliever Elizabeth Pennino then came in the fifth inning to seal the 10-2 victory over Monmouth.
This Saturday the Lady Jaspers face rival regular season champions, Iona College, in a MAAC conference doubleheader at Gaelic Park 12:00 P.M.
