Riverdale, N.Y. (October 19, 2006)-Senior
Katie Kuntz and freshman
Courtney McMahon each scored second half goals as Manhattan defeated Saint Peter's 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Jaspers (11-5-1; 3-3-1) have now won four of five games overall, and three of four games in the MAAC, putting themselves firmly in the mix for a spot in the postseason MAAC tournament. The loss sent the Peahens (2-13-1; 0-6-1) to its second straight loss.
Manhattan thoroughly dominated in the first half, holding an 11-2 advantage in shots. In the 19th minute,
Mikaela Coni nearly put the home side in front, taking a crossing pass from
Kimarie Balistierri and firing a shot that clanked off the crossbar.
In the second half, the Lady Jaspers wasted little time in converting a scoring chance. Just 22 seconds in, senior
Jess Garcia ripped a shot that was saved by Peahens keeper Jilian Fueshko. Kuntz crashed the net and put home the loose rebound to give Manhattan a 1-0 lead.
In the 51st minute, freshman
Courtney Hughes got the second goal started by serving a pass to Kuntz. The senior then fed a beautiful through ball to McMahon who deposited the ball into the back of the net to put Manhattan up two.
The goals put the Lady Jaspers well on their way to their 11th win on the season, tying the program record for wins that was set in 1993.
It was a banner day for both Kuntz and McMahon who continue to pile up impressive statistics. Kuntz's picked up goal number 10 and added three points on the day, giving her 22 for the season, both of which rank amongst the leaders in the MAAC. In addition to her goal, McMahon added one more assist to her single season record for assists, which now stands at 10. The previous record was eight, set in 2001.
The Lady Jaspers have off until October 27th, when they take on Loyola College at Gaelic Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
