Riverdale, N.Y. (September 3, 2005)--Manhattan Volleyball fell to American University in the championship match of the second annual Jasper Volleyball Invitational by a score of three games to none (30-22, 30-21, 30-18).
American (4-1, 0-0 Patriot League) jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in game one of the match, and the Eagles would not look back from there. Led by senior Cutrina Biddulph's 15 kills and .625 hitting percentage, American hit .340 as a team and never trailed throughout the match.
American sophomore Chelsa Brooks, who captured Tournament MVP honors, chipped in with seven kills and a .312 hitting percentage, while All-Tournament team selection Rubena Sukaj compiled eight kills and eight digs.
For Manhattan (1-1, 0-0 MAAC), senior Maggie Pfeifer earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as she recorded 13 kills and hit .400 during the championship match. Pfeifer finished the tournament with a whopping .472 hitting percentage.
Joining Pfeifer on the All-Tournament team for the Lady Jaspers is senior Megan O'Dorisio. O'Dorisio registered 11 kills and seven digs against American. Also chipping in for the Lady J's was sophomore Ashley Watson. In the championship, Watson posted nine kills and four digs.
Wofford College (3-1, 0-0 SoCon) defeated Quinnipiac University three games to one in the tournament's consolation game. Wofford had four individuals with double-digit kill totals. Two of the four, Christal Carey (19 kills and 16 digs) and All-Tournament selection Brittany Thompson (16 kills and 13 digs), posted double-doubles.
Leading the way for Quinnipiac en route to a spot on the All-Tournament team was junior Kalyn Hundley. Hundley notched 13 kills and 12 digs for the match.
Manhattan Volleyball will return to action on Tuesday, September 6 as they travel to Jamaica, Queens for a non-conference match with St. John's University. Game-time is 7 p.m.
