Fairfield, CT (May 1, 2005)- 2005 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship MVP
Ashley Devins made 12 saves and did not allow a first half goal to help lead Manhattan to it second straight MAAC Championship, defeating second-seeded Siena, 12-4, this afternoon at Lessing Field on the Fairfield campus.
The Lady Jaspers took control from the opening draw, breaking the ice just 36 seconds into the game on a goal by
Molly Pheterson. Manhattan would continue to dominate the time of possession, scoring six more times over the first 22 minutes of the game to open up a 7-0 lead with 8:55 left in the opening stanza.
Victoria Carman and
Brenna Tinari each tallied two goals during the run. Siena managed just six shots during the first half, and Devins was up to the task each time, recording four first half saves to keep the Saints off the scoreboard during the first 30 minutes.
Pheterson opened the second half much as she did the first, scoring 1:36 into the second stanza to increase the Manhattan lead to 8-0. Siena finally cracked the scoreboard with 26:35 left in the game to make the score 8-1, but the Lady Jaspers scored four of the next five goals to hold a 12-2 lead with 7:03 left in the game before the Saints scored two late tallies to provide the final margin.
Tinari tallied a game-high three goals, while
Victoria Carman,
Jenny Carman and Pheterson each tallied two goals.
Victoria Carman and
Mary Dudek each tallied three assists to provide game-highs in that category.
Devins added 12 saved to her school record tying 20 save performance in the semifinals as she was named Tournament MVP.
Dudek,
Kate Basler, Pheterson and
Victoria Carman joined Devins on the All-Tournament team.
The Lady Jaspers advance to the NCAA Play-In game next weekend at Northeast Conference Champion Mount Saint Mary's. Game time and date will be determined later tonight. The game is a rematch of last season's NCAA Play-In game, won by MSM.
