Molly Pheterson scored the game-winning goal with 41 seconds left in the third overtime to move top-seeded Manhattan into the Championship Game of the 2005 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship, defeating fourth-seeded Marist, 11-10, this afternoon at Lessing Field on the Fairfield campus.
After two scoreless overtimes, the Lady Jaspers and Red Foxes went into sudden victory overtime. Manhattan dominated the third extra session, putting three shots on goal, including a shot off the post, before Pheterson took the ball across the goal mouth and beat the Marist keeper to the lower corner, advancing the Lady Jaspers to the Championship Game for the second straight season.
The first half was played evenly, as neither team could gain a significant advantage. Marist tallied two straight goals to take the largest lead by either team in the opening stanza, taking a 4-3 lead with 3:44 left in the half. The Lady Jaspers would respond in the final minute, as
Alicia Psillos and
Brenna Tinari scored with 31 and 10 second left in the half, respectively, to give Manhattan a 5-4 halftime lead.
The Lady Jaspers turned up the offensive pressure coming out of halftime, scoring five of the first eight goals of the second half to take a 10-6 lead with 9:36 remaining in the game. Marist would score the next three goals of the game, two from Lindsey Deiner, including the tying goal with 3:01 remaining in the game.
Neither team could score the game-winner over the last 3:01 of regulation nor two 3:00 overtimes before Pheterson supplied the late game heroics in the third overtime.
Lauren Civardi paced Manhattan with three goals, while Second Team All-MAAC pick
Victoria Carman, Psillos, and Pheterson each added two.
Lady Jasper goalkeeper
Ashley Devins tied a Manhattan record with 20 saves in net, including two from point blank range in the second overtime. She ties the record set by Daphne Mickle twice in the 1997 season.
Manhattan advances to face the winner of the #2 Siena/#3 LeMoyne game on Sunday, May 1, at 12 noon.
